It's just a reminder of how the main show had potential, that is started loosing somewhere in the middle. It's like Ai running away from Neiru, and then coming back for the sake of... Nothing, really.
1st half of the special is just a recap, which is... Bad. Unless you've watched the original it will be difficult to follow, but if you did watch it, then it will just bring to light how hectic the story became there at some point. And while recap tries to make it a bit more linear, I guess, it still fails.
And then the 2nd half is just same set of scenes, that can barely connect with each other. Weird cuts and time lapses, that are supposed to show "character progress" feel as empty attempts to show something, that is not that. Like an android trying to be human.
Speaking of which: this revelation is so out of nowhere. And they did not even try to show Airu instead of showing something like a dream. And Ai throwing away her phone simply contradicts her own character.
This was painful to watch. Original was going downhill by the end, but it had enough inertia to pull you through. Open ending of made sense, if not as a hope for a sequel, than just a story device. The special on the other hand took all the bad, jumbled it up in a blender and burped it out on us clearly showing, that there will be no sequel, because who would want to watch the continuation of this?
