They don't make movies like this anymore. Yes, it's completely inaccurate, essentially, ignoring some very important social constructs of the time, but you should not really care. The plot is very simple and predictable, and the characters are probably not the most fleshed-out you can have but... It's still better than a huge percentage of movies and shows they do nowadays.
Even if they would try to make a TV series, they would not be able to recapture the same charm. They would go for something more realistic or for something utterly stupid. They would also pad the time even more without realizing that 4 episodes are probably enough. I mean, this movie is not wasting time one anything, it's straight to the point. And it's believable and relatable just enough.
In fact, it's a fairy tale, just without magic. You have a peasant that gets status through a lie, but reaffirms it trough his deeds. You have a love story, which does have some challenges (albeit small compared to other stories). You have an adversary, who is driven by arrogance and, in a sense, jealousy. And you have friends of the knight, that support him through the journey. I would even dare say it has a moral: be true to yourself and never give up. Or something along those lines.
Regardless, I really enjoyed rewatching this. It was one of the first movies I watched with original audio, when I was still learning English, and my experience with it was largely the same as back in like 2002-2003. And I enjoyed it much more than Princess Bride, which is not a bad movie either.
