Having meet a terrible fate twice (once on their way to open a cocooned world of scared people to a pulse of life) they had visited both paradise & punishment, being lead by Shi who has lead many on the same path time and time again, the Neutral Side Character had made the decision to stay behind to tie up the ends of the tails they had started, however in doing so they had bound themselves to Shi.
